Pete Downing

A familiar face to some, I re-joined Citrix Systems, Inc. from BMC Software Inc. In my first stint at Citrix, I joined via the Ardence acquisition, so I have a vast knowledge of Provisioning Server as well as XenDesktop. I also have a deep knowledge of Citrix, where I was involved with Citrix’s cloud platform and cloud networking initiatives working specifically on Citrix NetScaler, Citrix CloudBridge and other strategic cloud initiatives. I have a diverse background that includes product management, pre-sales engineering and time as a IT systems administrator. With a background in networking, virtualization, server based computing, application deployment, profile management, Microsoft AD and systems administration; I bring a vast knowledge of the industry to the role as a PM. Aside from being an avid CrossFitter, my hobbies include road cycling, mountain biking, carpentry, electrical work, bonsai trees and photography. I am also a proud father of my two year old daughter!
  1. VLAN Tagging and XenClient Enterprise 4.5

    XenClient_VLAN_Arch

VLAN tagging separates network traffic between virtual desktops running on a single XenClient-powered end-point device, enabling organizations to meet strict security and compliance requirements.  Why would organizations care about this?  It’s valuable in any use case where a different level of security or isolation is required in one virtual desktop vs. another – for example a corporate vs. a personal desktop, or a desktop that’s ...

  2. Client Virtualization Propels Forward with XenClient 4.5 – What’s New from a Technical Standpoint?

    XC45_Blog7

A few months ago at our Synergy event in Barcelona, we announced XenClient 4.5. In late December, the software became generally available.  XenClient 4.5 represents the second major release of the software since Citrix’ acquisition of Virtual Computer – a move we made to accelerate product innovation in client virtualization. For those of you haven’t looked at XenClient recently, today’s XenClient looks very different than the ...

  3. Securing External-Facing XenClient Synchronizers with NetScaler

    SSL_Offload1

One of the key value propositions of XenClient is the remote image and device management capabilities of XenClient Synchronizer– the management server for XenClient devices.  Synchronizer enables customers to centrally create, manage and update images for delivery to endpoints where the image executes locally.  Synchronizer also enables administrators to specify client side policies and for users to back up their images. A key use case for ...

  4. Your Logo Here… Enabling Enterprises to Use YOUR Cloud!

I have heard this time and time again: “Many enterprises want to take advantage of cloud computing but do not want to give up their own datacenters.”  I have also heard the term “hybrid cloud” grossly over utilized and defined over and over again.  I would make a bet that if you stood in a room of IT folks and asked each person to define ...

  5. Road to Synergy Barcelona… Pushing the boundaries of the datacenter with Citrix NetScaler CloudBridge

I have heard this time and time again, “Many enterprises want to take advantage of cloud computing but do not want to give up their own datacenters.”  I have also heard the term “hybrid cloud” grossly over-utilized and defined over and over again.  I would make a bet that if you stood in a room of IT folks and asked each person to define “What ...

  6. NetScaler Cloud Bridge… A Must for Any Cloud

So I was having a conversation the other day with a colleague and we started talking about TV shows and movies and how they would be nothing without the one key supporting actor/actress in the show... "How I Meet Your Mother" would be a flop without Barney Stinson. "Big Bang Theory" would not have the nerdy sarcasm without Sheldon Cooper. "The Departed" would not have had the edgy ...

  7. Cookie Cutter Clouds… No Thanks!

So I went to the store the other day and bought some good old "Ready to Bake" cookie mix. The great thing about this is you always know what you are going to get. You follow the directions, turn on the oven, and place the dough on the pan. The only mistake you can make is if you cook them too long! 12 to 15 ...

  8. Imagine a world without bridges… Cloud computing is not much different!

So I was driving to work this morning and got thinking: each morning we get into a car, drive down a street, a highway or in some cases take public transportation.  At some point in your commute there is a river or you need to pass over another road and at this point, imagine the world without bridges.  If there were no bridges, you cannot ...

  9. Moving Apps to the Cloud – Half the Fun is Getting There

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Nathan Day, the CTO of Softlayer and ask him a few questions surrounding cloud computing. Back at Synergy 2010, Citrix launched seven turnkey cloud solutions, focused on practical cloud use cases and delivered by proven cloud providers, that let enterprises take advantage of cloud economics to address pressing business and IT needs. Citrix Cloud Solutions ...

Cloud Countdown C minus 2 Hey Systems Administrators: Does cloud computing keep you awake at night making you wonder how the heck you can leverage Cloud Computing? Are you currently running VMware in your datacenter and wonder, can the cloud support the many vmdks you have? Do you have resources back in the datacenter that applications in the cloud will need access to? ...
