One of the few certainties in life is change. Keeping abreast of technological change can be a daunting and paralyzing task but in these times, more than ever before, we avoid it at our peril.
To help you avoid being paralyzed by the constantly shift sands of technology; each year Citrix publishes our five-year vision that identifies where technology is headed and its impact on people and society. We call it the Citrix Technology Landscape.
The theme for this years Landscape is Joie De Vivre, which in French has two meanings, “Joy of Life” and “Self-Actualization”. In it we call out the emerging technologies that will permeate our world to free us from many burdens of life. These technologies allow for a more natural interaction with computers, present the right information at the right time, and automate life’s more mundane tasks.
Taking these technologies and using them to create your “personal digital advantage” provides the opportunity for greater joy and fulfilment in work and life. This raises questions such as, what is the next must-have device, how to become more knowledgeable than the competition and where should attention be devoted?
You can customize your “personal digital advantage” at work by taking advantage of Bring Your Own programs. Owing to solutions like Citrix Mobile Workspaces, many people are now using their personal devices like smartphones and tablets at work. Some are even using their own wearable devices, or taking advantage of tools like Google Now, Siri and Microsoft Cortana. This, however, is only the tip of the iceberg.
In the future the most successful people at work will be those that find a way to take advantage of the ever increasing range of powerful consumer services. If you haven’t done so already, take a look at automation services like IFTTT and Zapier that cleverly link your cloud services to create automated workflows; or tools like Lynda or GetAbstract that enable you to learn new skills more quickly.
Honing our distributed work skills is becoming imperative as we increasingly work in distributed teams. The ability to work collaboratively with people spread all over the globe is imperative. This requires new tools to help communicate and collaborate in a way that emulates physically being there by doing things like having a virtual hallway conversation. Citrix is experimenting in this space with products like Convoi for real time team communication.
We must enhance our ability to filter and process information in order to make insightful decisions. The amount of information we are exposed is increasing dramatically, but our ability to process this information is not. Fortunately new digital tools and techniques that augment what we can do with our own minds are emerging to help. Speed reading tools; knowledge graphing, and content recommendation are among some of these tools.
We see enterprises become matchmakers, pairing great talent to great problems. These businesses will embrace the freelance and creative economies as they move from fixed to virtual workplaces. Freelance and creative economies are flourishing as people take advantage of the ability to work from anywhere. Services like Kaggle, Elance and Freelancer are making it easier for individuals or groups to do freelance work – this is where a pool of great talent will be found. By decoupling your business from fixed locations and operating hours, you become able to utilize the best talent from anywhere in world.
To do this, enterprises will need to be able to deliver corporate services into individual’s digital BYO world. Increasingly, employees will arrive at work virtually, with their own devices, apps and data. This requires that IT moves away from a model of deploying hardware and software, building value added services, and managing operations towards a model where IT helps integrate and aggregate a vast array of services. This is especially exciting for us at Citrix because enabling people to work from anywhere, anytime and on any device is what we do.
So what does this all mean? Ultimately, over the next five years we will see a creative revolution, enabled by a technology abundance that will enhance the quality of life for all humanity. Just as the industrial revolution reduced the burden of manual labor, the creative revolution will enable your “Joie De Vivre”.
