I’m now about four months into my role here at Citrix as Group VP & GM for the app and desktop virtualization business. While lots of people might know what it’s like to take responsibility for an established product line, how many get the chance to do it for one that is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year?!

And it’s never been a more exciting time to be in the desktop and application virtualization space. We’re seeing steady interest in app virtualization, which we supported with our recent launch of the next generation of XenApp 7.5. Desktops-as-a-Service (DaaS) is top of mind and Citrix has been successfully delivering this capability to customers via the Citrix Service Provider program for about four years now. With the rise in popularity of smartphones and tablets we now welcome another innovative device built for cloud computing – the Google Chromebook.

I am fortunate to lead a team at Citrix that is at the epicenter of innovation in an industry that is moving at a rapid pace. As an industry leader, it’s inevitable that someone will come along and challenge you – and that’s what VMware has attempted today with the introduction of an app publishing feature as part of Horizon.

Even in this highly competitive environment, I’m very confident in the strength and longevity of our leadership position. My confidence relies on the bedrock of our customers and our partners and NOT on press release messaging or “checkbox” functionality. Consider these facts:

  • Citrix XenApp is the most widely adopted and deployed app delivery solution
With over 330,000 customers, more than 100 million users, and customers of all sizes from 100 to 100,000+ employees, Citrix delivers more business-critical Windows applications than any other app virtualization solution. In addition to all our enterprise customers, Citrix partners with ISVs and 2,600-plus service providers to deliver apps and desktops-as-a-service to hundreds of thousands of users, an overwhelming majority of which are SMBs.
  • Customers have shaped XenApp into their ideal solution over its 25-year life
Only through real-world production deployments can you identify the thousands of requirements needed to run the wide variety of Windows applications that businesses depend on. Customers have driven the development and evolution of XenApp for decades, including hundreds of security policies, superior user experience enhancements, robust operational management features and more recently mobile device and app requirements. By addressing each of these needs and the broadest set of use cases, XenApp is the most complete and trusted application virtualization solution on the market.
  • XenApp has the most extensive ecosystem of partners for app virtualization
With 20,000+ products in the Citrix Ready program specifically targeted at adding value to XenApp, customers have the support of an entire technology ecosystem when they deliver applications via XenApp. From ISVs like SAP, Cerner, McKesson and Oracle, to peripherals and datacenter and cloud infrastructure, our partners are enabling successful deployments.

Our customers and partners have played an instrumental role in the evolution of XenApp till date, but I also like where we are headed in the future. With the release of Citrix XenApp 7.5, we have a platform that is designed from the ground up for innovation in mobility and cloud. XenApp led the industry with the ability to transform Windows apps into a touch-enabled mobile experience. XenApp was the first solution with reference architectures for AWS and Microsoft Azure and most recently, XenApp introduced the revolutionary ability to provision directly to AWS from the standard management console.

The XenApp 7.5 platform enables our customers to rapidly reap the benefits from the latest features and enhancements. As Citrix releases these new capabilities, customers can simply add the capability to their existing infrastructure and start provisioning to users immediately. We’re ushering in an era of automated infrastructure updates and seamless migrations for our customers.

Our leadership and innovation gives us a terrific foundation to ride the crest of the next wave in computing ahead – mobile workspaces. XenApp is the central component of a Citrix Mobile Workspace solution. The Citrix Mobile Workspace solution provides employees access to all of the apps, desktops, data and services they need to be productive. Applications are the foundation of the workspace and as organizations move forward with their mobility initiatives, successful delivery of business-critical Windows apps is essential as the emerging mobile devices cannot natively run these apps. Citrix offers a device agnostic capability to deliver Windows applications to more than 3 billion devices, including smartphones, tablets and Chromebooks.

So from my view at the helm, we have a tremendous base to build on, lots of innovation just released, and a customer-driven vision for the future of mobility and cloud.
