When Citrix announced the Citrix AppDNA application migration software now has expanded support for Microsoft migrations, the question customers frequently asked was “Great – can the AppDNA software tell me if I should choose Windows 7 or Windows 8?”

Migrating from XP to Windows 7 or Windows 8 is big question that involves your budget, strategy, industry analyst advice and hardware. From an AppDNA software perspective, the answer is this:  include application compatibility analysis as part of your OS migration planning and experience fewer hurdles as you choose a new OS and complete the migration.

AppDNA 6.2, available now, includes updated support for Windows 8, Internet Explorer 10, Windows Server 2012, App-V 5 and System Center 2012.  Even with the no-charge trial version of the AppDNA application compatibility software, you can import a set of applications today and start analyzing the impact of Windows 7 or Windows 8 for your organization.

Automated Application Compatibility for Migrating to Windows 8

First seen in the October AppDNA 6.1 SP1 release as “early access features,” the AppDNA 6.2 support for Microsoft platforms includes new algorithms and updated algorithms for accurate application testing.

At a glance, AppDNA software compares application compatibility results across multiple technologies – including different configurations of Windows 7, Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.

Remember AppDNA uses heuristic algorithms to ensure flexible and in-depth analysis of your applications against your custom OS – or multiple OS images.  A heuristic approach provides the flexibility to accommodate changes in the application or your OS image. For example,  AppDNA 6.2 algorithms now capture more information about digital signatures from imported applications and combine this “application DNA” with OS DNA to note applications that will not run on Windows 8 and Server 2012 due to certificate trust issues.

AppDNA 6.2 provides application compatibility testing for the unique way your organization has customized each OS. AppDNA can actually test your applications against several different OS images at one time. Perhaps you have separate images for different regions or divisions and want to ensure applications run well on each image. Some current customers actively work with 2 master corporate OS images—one for the main company and one for a very large company they just acquired. AppDNA helps them speed delivery of newly requested applications by automatically testing the apps on both the main company and acquired company images. IT can promptly provide compatible applications to employees who work on the same teams, but have different OS images.

Current customers can download AppDNA 6.2 here – but if you’re not yet an AppDNA customer, try the no-cost AppDNA trial download here. The free AppDNA trial version allows you to import an unlimited number of applications and see the overall compatibility status of the application set.  As an added bonus, you can model the application migration effort with the AppDNA free trial using the AppDNA Effort Calculator to determine the time, cost and staff that need to be involved in the application migration project.
