Citrix’s XenDesktop 5.6 and XenApp 6.5 are leading enterprise technologies with their individual merits in VDI and Application/Desktop Virtualization. However when both solutions are integrated, enterprise IT can achieve true abstraction of OS, Apps, and User Data. Such abstraction reduces operations and maintenance cost, provides business agility, and better enterprise security. The good news is that XenDesktop 5.6 licensing allows for this kind of integration but each user consumes only one license no matter how many sessions they have across the XenDesktop 5.6 and XenApp 6.5 farms – XenDesktop and XenApp farms can share the same license server. In this blog I share the general guidelines I follow when integrating XenDesktop 5.6 with XenApp 6.5:

Step 1Build XenDesktop 5.6 farm (note: if you already have a XenApp 6.5 farm with Web Interface configured then do not reinstall Web Interface).

Step 2Build XenApp 6.5 farm (note: if you already have a XenDesktop 5.6 farm with Web Interface configured then do not reinstall Web Interface).

Step 3 – Configure Web Interface to integrate XenDesktop 5.6 with XenApp 6.5

  1. Logon to the server where Web Interface is installed
  2. Add at least one server from each farm in the Server Farms configuration
  3. Test access to your virtual desktop via Web Interface URL
