Why email ? Why not native email ? Why Citrix ? … Those are questions I frequently get when talking about our new entry to the mobile enterprise market. This is a big bet Citrix is making and could be considered a significant step outside our traditional app delivery and infrastructure scope. On the other hand we think this makes a lot of sense, here’s why:
.
Why Email ?
That’s were the eyeballs are … Email is by far the top app that business users depend on, all day every day, especially when mobile. Inter-related to Email is Calendar and Contacts so we included this also in the same app. Every company developing a Mobility strategy needs to define a plan for email first and foremost. Not only is there a large market, but we also believe that Citrix can provide the BEST email app for IT control AND user experience.
.
Why is native email an issue for IT ?
Native email works ok but… From an IT perspective consider the simple scenario of a user viewing an email attachment … When viewing the user gets the built in option to open the document in any app that is registered with the same file type. So if a user has a personal Dropbox account, then Dropbox shows up and easily opens and syncs the document to a personal cloud completely outside of IT control … Game over … the IP is gone .. With @WorkMail, only work apps that are protected by the MDX container technology are visible to the open-in function. So that personal Dropbox or Evernote is not visible regardless of the file type. Beyond this example are many other issues that IT needs to consider before allowing BYOD.
.
Why is native email an issue for users ?
From a user perspective there are many limitations of native iOS ( and Android) email. Simple things we take for granted on PC’s simply don’t work with the base native apps. For example if I get an email request for document , I can’t simply reply attach a doc and say “here”. I need to go to another documents app find the doc and create a new message from that app re-entering address , subject , message etc. With @WorkMail , a simple click on an attachment icon provides access to ShareFile docs clicking to doc inserts the link, click send and your done!
Another simple example; setting up a meeting with colleagues is useless with the native calendar app because you can not see the open time slots on multiple calendars. With @WorkMail when setting up a meeting it’s easy invite colleagues and see their free time before booking a Meeting. Beyond that with a simple click its possible to make any meeting a GoToMeeting without leaving to another app.
 .
Why Citrix ?
Citrix has been a trusted brand solving IT issues for over twenty years. More recently Citrix has also provided leading solutions for collaboration with GoToMeeting and ShareFile for sharing documents. These are natural apps to integrate with Email and Calendar as noted above. Beyond that, Podio has potential to integrate with email and optimize the experience along with workflows.
The traditional business of providing safe access to business apps and data from windows servers is not going away, but now the same IT organizations need to enable Windows, web , HTML5 and mobile apps to any device.
Citrix has now made Mobility a top priority for the company :-) and we have been investing heavily in engineering resources as well as product design to provide an enterprise class solution with superior user experience. We believe that Citrix is in an ideal position to help companies enable the productivity benefits of BYOD while providing the security and manageability benefits leveraging the same Citrix infrastructure that manages apps and data for all users across all devices. Alternative solutions provide only a point solution targeting limited devices and from what we hear, the security guys may approve but users hate it.

So why should Citrix do email ? Why not ?
